Gogontlejang’s inspiring story

Aug 12, 2014

Gogontlejang, 19, Botswana

At just five years old, Gogontlejang was determined to help people.

Despite being so young, she set up her first initiative and nearly 15 years on she remains the Executive Director of the Gogontlejang Phaladi Pillar of Hope Project (GPPHP).

It hasn’t been an easy time. Her mother was nearly killed in a horrific accident, leaving her father to care for both his daughter and wife. Nonetheless, Gogontlejang has been able to dedicate the same passion she has for her family to her social work and her education.

The GPPHP project donates food, clothing and financial assistance to vulnerable people in Botswana, and provides education and training and empowerment sessions to help them move on. It also runs programmes for human rights and advocacy.

Gogontlejang is an inspiration to young people in Botswana and is a member of several development committees including the UNESCO National Youth Subcommission- Botswana, Patron of the Botswana Youth Water Action Team, Member of the Protect The Goal Campaign Botswana Taskforce, CONDOMIZE Campaign Education Anchor and a Youth Ambassador with UNFPA Botswana Country office.

Currently studying for a degree in political science, she says “I am passionate about working with my fellow young people in developing initiatives by us, and for us. We are the leaders of today and tomorrow.”
